User's guide

This guide explains the purpose, structure, use and navigation of the Writing Workshop.

The purpose of the workshop

The purpose of this workshop is to assist students to develop effective writing skills.

The structure of the workshop

The workshop is based on a 4-stage plan of the writing process that provides a comprehensive model of effective writing. Linked to the stages are 15 modules that provide step-by-step guidance for how to write effectively.

The stages

Each stage has specific objectives. The 15 learning modules have been designed carefully to help students understand what is involved in achieving those objectives.

The modules

Each module contains examples example icon, activities activity icon, and additional resources resource icon. It is assumed that learning will be optimised by interacting with the content. Each module, therefore, includes an activity that is designed to facilitate learning and to provide an opportunity for self assessment.

Using this workshop

It is assumed that most students would benefit from working their way through the modules, from the first to the last, although their pace and intensity are likely to differ. Some students might, however, have particular needs. They might prefer to go directly to the modules that meet those needs. While all the modules in this workshop are an integral part of a comprehensive plan of the writing process, each module, nevertheless, stands on its own and can therefore be used independently.

Navigating this workshop

At the top of every page is the menu bar. The menu bar takes you to 6 different pages. These are:

You can use this menu bar, at any time, to go to any one of those pages. To navigate your way around the modules, go to the Plan page. At the end of each module, there are two links, one to the preceding module, and a second one to the following module. Clicking on those also allows you to navigate your way through the modules.

To begin working through the workshop, or to find a specific module, go to the Plan.
