Reading for a "story": activity

Instructions for the activity

The following activity is concerned with the achievement of coherence in order that the writing tells a story.

A critical component of achieving coherence is the effective use of transitional signals.

The two paragraphs prepared for this activity were carefully written to tell a story. Deliberate use of transitional signals helps to achieve coherence. The transitional signals have, however, been omitted. The list of all the omitted transitional signals is presented above the two paragraphs. Your task is to fill in the gaps by re-inserting the transition signals.

To do this, you will need to read the text carefully and decide which of the transition signals appropriately fills each of the gaps. In each instance, there is one and only one correct transition signal: go to the activity
