Ordering and reviewing the strategic notes: Activity

You have been asked to write an essay on the following topic:

"Men and women differ in their self-evaluations of attractiveness. How do evolutionary theories account for the differences?"

The following ten ideas or pieces of information have been produced from your reading purposefully. These are some of the notes that you would have made for yourself in preparing to write the essay above. The notes are for the Introduction, the Body, and the Conclusion of the essay.

Your task is to

  1. First, identify which section of the essay (that is, Introduction, Body, Conclusion) they go into. You should identify which section by reminding yourself of the purpose of each of the three sections, and thinking about which of the statements will help you to achieve those purposes.
  2. Second, decide the order in which they are logically arranged within the section. You want to achieve logical coherence within each section.
      Jumbled sentences
    1. According to evolutionary theories, those differences are best explained in terms of different reproductive advantages.
    2. For women, attractiveness is assumed to signal fertility.
    3. While men typically overrate or exaggerate their attractiveness to all women, women overrate their attractiveness only when they are confronted with attractive men (Berry, 2000).
    4. Physical attractiveness is, therefore, thought to be a less useful indicator of men’s reproductive status.
    5. Researchers have shown that men and women have different tendencies when they evaluate their own attractiveness.
    6. Evolutionary theories propose that attractiveness has different implications for men and women (Wade, 2003).
    7. Women, on the other hand, overrate their attractiveness only to attractive men because they perceive them to be potential long-term partners.
    8. From an evolutionary perspective, therefore, men overrate their attractiveness in order to create the belief that they are desirable to all or many women (Buss, 1995).
    9. Men’s ability to father offspring is, however, less clearly linked to age.
    10. Compared with women, men are thought to prefer a large number of short-term sexual partners in order to increase their chances of reproducing (Buss & Schmidt, 1993).
